Are You Creating From Your Values?

I release my self of the shoulds of the world
— The Love Guru

It’s easy to create and work from a place of habit. The old, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ mentality….

If you are going through the motions in life and feeling the drag of habit and expectations, read on to see how you can shake up your habit and create from a place of happiness.

Creating From ‘Shoulds’

For most of my young adult life…. I created from a list of “shoulds”. In fact, I would bet to say, most western civilizations live from a place of “should”.

You should go to college… You should get a “big girl job”…. The list goes on and on.

The list of societal expectations can be neverending. It’s a ‘‘life escalator’’ that is being driven by goals that are set by society.

Example: Graduate high school. Go to college. Get a job. Get a partner. Get married. Buy a house. Have a baby. Work 50+ years. Retire (hopefully).

This escalator is set and you go through the motions to get a life of happiness. We think hitting normal milestone targets will lead to a life of happiness BUT if you are miserable hitting the targets, is it really worth it?

You can tell if you are just going through the motions when you listen to your inner voice and you hear the word “should”. For example, ‘I don’t really want to do ‘X’ but I should because {insert lame excuse here}.

I’m not saying the partner, child, 9-5 job, and white picket fence won’t make you happy… A lot of those things are extremely satisfying and desirable. I’m just asking you to make sure it’s what YOU want! Make sure it’s done in a way that lights YOU up! I circle back and repeat….

If you are miserable when you hit your targets or milestones, then is it worth it?

The whole journey should feel fun! Granted, there will be hard times, but those don’t need to last. Your true nature is love and your ultimate goal in life is to be happy.

When you are going after goals that aren’t actually your goals, you silence your truth and your inner voice. This is a slow death. But, luckily for you… You can get it back.

When you become aware of what is driving the ship, it can be scary but then it becomes liberating!

Questions to journal on:

  • “What do I do, even though I don’t want to”

  • “I need to give myself permission to be…”

  • “What makes my body and spirit feel heavy?”

  • “What brings my body and spirit alive?”

Danielle LaPorte (the queen of desire) says “you don’t have to want what you’re supposed to have”. Throughout her book, The Desire map, she leads you to figure out your soul’s pull… READ THE BOOK and do the work!

Creating from a Life of Wants

This concept is asking you to step away from saying the word should and become aware of what you want! The ego is going to HATE THIS. Your wants are what your Spirit/Soul craves and the “shoulds” are the doubts that your ego uses to quiet them down.

When we give ourselves space to feel, we can become aware of the parts of our life we have numbed out or continually hushed.

At first, it’s going to be hard. Getting honest and tapping back into your senses that you’ve numbed is never easy!

Anything is possible if you got enough nerve.
— J.K. Rowling

First, you might get mad and overwhelmed. Imagine a friend whom you pushed aside for YEARS, they are going to have ALOT to say!

But as you settle in, you get to become your own best friend. The type of friend that you tell all your deepest dark desires. The type of friend you trust because no craving or goal is unheard.

As you listen to yourself, your intuition begins to strengthen and your ego dies down.

What the ego deemed as impossible or improbable can than start to be heard and acted upon.

Remember no dream is too big. But you do know that deep down you have to be brave enough to follow through.
